Coastal Living names this New Jersey spot the Best Beach in America

Ocean City, New Jersey, topped Coastal Living magazine’s Best Beach in America contest, adding another reason to visit the No. 1 family beach community in the country.

The magazine looked for the ultimate spots by the shore and found beaches from Fort Abercrombie State Historic Park in Alaska to Ogunquit Beach in Maine. There are several beaches within road-trip distances from Lancaster County. Presque Isle State Park near Erie, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Ocean City Beach, Maryland, and Main Beach, New York, were the other Mid-Atlantic beaches on the list.

Readers voted for favorite beaches from 30 coastal states for the best beach bracket, which ended with Ocean City winning over Huntington Beach, Calif.

The magazine shared these fun facts about Ocean City:

Ocean City has eight miles of beach and a 2.5-mile boardwalk.
The island stored freshly caught whales in the 1700s and was originally known as Peck's Beach.
The town is dry and no public drinking is allowed on the island.
